Dexter Guerrieri was raised in the mountains of Colorado, the fifth generation of a ranching family. An excellent horseman and a competitive team roper, Dexter was also raised with an eye on real estate, watching his parents strategically and periodically sell land to accomplish their business goals of acquiring better land and expanding their cattle herd. Dexter moved to New York City in 1979, and began working in real estate shortly thereafter.
In the late 1980s, Dexter had the vision of creating a full-service real estate company, with a mission of providing superior service in the industry. In 1989, Dexter and his business partner – and wife – Jane van den Berg Ordway, incorporated Vandenberg, Inc., choosing Jane’s middle name as the name for their company. Meaning “from the mountain,” van den Berg seemed a good name to name their joint business.
In the early 1990s, Dexter grew Vandenberg to include many capable agents, selling coops, condos, and townhouses. In 1993, Austin K. Haldenstein, founder of Austin Haldenstein Real Estate (the largest real estate company on Manhattan’s West Side), and Dexter’s mentor, joined Vandenberg and worked with us until his death in 1999.
As business continued to grow at Vandenberg, Jane moved from her full-time career to join forces with Dexter in the day-today brokerage of Vandenberg; it was then that they focused on their passion: townhouses.
Dexter and Jane have been inspired by top realtors internationally who have grown their companies by developing teams of professionals, enabling them to expand, while continuing to provide superior brokerage and service. Together, they have developed the systems and recruited the dedicated professionals of the Vandenberg Team to translate that vision into reality in New York City’s challenging townhouse market.
